H.S. Class of 1990 Expectations for Age 40

When they were in their senior year of high school, the LSAY Cohort One participants (10th grade fall of 1987) were asked to think about the things they expected to do by the time they were 40 years old (see Figure 1).

More than 90% of the group expected to be married by age 40 and 88% expected to own their own home by age 40. Seventy-two percent expected to vote regularly and one in three of high school seniors in this group expected to own their own business by age 40. Twenty-three percent expected to have three or more children by age 40, and 15% expected to have completed some military service by age 40. Four percent said that they would have run for public office at least once by age 40.
